Assistant Professor · Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering · Department of Computer Science · Vanderbilt University
Alan is a roboticist developing principled autonomy for robots in medicine. His research bridges model-based and data-driven methods through probabilistic, uncertainty-aware formulations, with applications in autonomous surgical systems and minimally invasive surgical robotics.
Before joining Vanderbilt, Alan was an Assistant Professor in the Kahlert School of Computing and the Robotics Center at the University of Utah. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Medical Engineering and Discovery Lab at Vanderbilt University. He earned his B.S. from the University of New Mexico and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he worked in the Computational Robotics Research Group.
